Chapter 8
Beyond the Brim
Eleanor realizes her cap allows her to perceive a hidden layer of reality. This newfound understanding empowers her to confront the Whisperer and its motives.

A soft rustle drew her attention. Not the usual scuttling of a mouse, but something more deliberate. A faint shimmer, like heat rising from a summer pavement, danced at the edge of her vision, near a towering bookshelf. It was there one moment, gone the next. Eleanor blinked, rubbing her eyes. Had she imagined it? The cap gave another little tremor, a gentle nudge.
