The air in the library hummed with an unspoken question, a static charge that Eleanor felt more keenly than anyone else. Her cap, pulled low as always, was a familiar weight, a comforting boundary between her and the bustling world. Today, however, it felt different. A faint, almost imperceptible tingling pulsed beneath the worn fabric, a subtle tremor that mirrored the unease settling in her stomach. It had started after the incident with the vanishing textbook – not just any textbook, but the one with the brightly coloured cover that had been sitting right on her desk, only to reappear an hour later tucked away on the highest shelf, out of reach for even the tallest student.
Beside her, the New Student, whose name Eleanor had learned was Alex, was sketching industriously in a notebook, but their eyes kept flicking towards Eleanor. Alex had a way of observing that felt less like intrusion and more like quiet curiosity, a quality Eleanor found surprisingly comforting. They hadn’t asked about the cap, not directly, but their gaze lingered on it, a silent acknowledgement of its presence, its importance.
“It’s like… like the air is full of secrets,” Eleanor murmured, her voice barely a whisper, even though the library was mostly empty save for a few focused readers. She traced the embroidered logo on her cap with a fingertip. “But no one else can hear them.”
