The air in the clearing hung thick and heavy, a tangible shroud woven from fear and the damp earth. The flickering fire, our sole defense against the encroaching darkness, cast dancing shadows that distorted familiar faces into grotesque masks. William was gone. Just this morning, he’d been a boisterous presence, teasing Maya about her sketches, his laughter echoing through the trees. Now, only a chilling silence where his voice should have been. Maya, too, had vanished, her absence a gaping wound in the fabric of our remaining group. Gary, his face etched with a grim determination that settled deeper with each passing hour, stood by the fire, his gaze fixed on the impenetrable wall of trees surrounding us.

“We can’t just wait,” he rumbled, his voice a low growl that cut through the uneasy quiet. “Sitting here, we’re just targets. Easy pickings.”

He was right, of course. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a fresh wave of adrenaline through me. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a constant reminder of my own vulnerability. I was observant, analytical, yes, but beneath the surface, a deep-seated fear of being alone, of being abandoned, gnawed at me. William’s disappearance, Maya’s silence… it amplified that primal dread.
