The air hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket woven from damp earth, pine needles, and the acrid tang of fear. It had been hours since Gary had stumbled back to camp, his face a mask of horror, his voice a strangled rasp describing what he’d found. William. And Maya. Gone. Not just gone, but… gone. The words themselves felt like a betrayal of the vibrant life that had been William just yesterday, the quiet grace that had been Maya. Now, only the chilling silence remained, punctuated by the ragged breaths of those of us left.

I knelt beside William’s makeshift grave, a shallow scrape in the forest floor marked by a pile of stones Gary had hastily gathered. The other grave, Maya’s, was a little further off, near the gnarled roots of an ancient oak. It felt wrong, so wrong, to be performing these grim rites in the pale light filtering through the canopy. William, always so full of life, reduced to a collection of bruised flesh and broken hope. Maya, her sketchbook now surely lost to the earth, her gentle spirit extinguished.

My mind, usually a whirring engine of observation, felt sluggish, bogged down by the sheer weight of grief and disbelief. But a small, insistent part of me, the part that always needed to understand, began to stir. I scanned the area around William’s resting place. Gary had said he’d found him near the stream, a good twenty-minute walk from our campsite. What had he been doing there? And Maya with him? Gary had been vague, his trauma a wall between his words and the coherence I desperately needed. He’d found them, he’d said, near the stream, and then he’d run.
