A Tense Night

The rain hammered against the canvas of the tent, a relentless percussion that mirrored the frantic beat of my own heart. Outside, the forest was a black, churning maw, swallowed by the storm’s fury. Inside, the air was thick with a different kind of tempest – fear, suspicion, and the suffocating silence that follows a scream. William was gone. And not just gone, but *gone*. The way Gary had described it, the sheer finality of it, clawed at my insides.

We were huddled together, a pathetic knot of humanity clinging to the dim glow of a single lantern. Nancy sat closest to me, her usual calm unnervingly brittle. Her eyes, wide and too bright, darted around the cramped space as if expecting the forest itself to breach our flimsy sanctuary. Violet, usually so effervescent, was a pale, trembling shadow, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. Maya, her artistic sensitivity now a burden, was curled into a ball, her soft whimpers lost beneath the storm’s roar. Gary, ever the pragmatist, was a solid, unmoving presence at the tent flap, his jaw set, his gaze fixed on the impenetrable darkness outside. And Christopher… Christopher was the picture of concerned sympathy, his hand resting lightly on Violet’s shoulder, his voice a low, soothing murmur, offering words of comfort that felt hollow in the face of what had happened.

“We can’t just sit here,” William’s boisterous laugh echoed in my memory, a cruel mockery of our current predicament. He’d been the first to suggest exploring the old logging trail, the one that had led us deeper into the woods than any of us had intended. Now, with the storm raging and the path back to civilization swallowed by mud and fallen branches, we were truly stranded.
