The air, thick with the metallic tang of blood and the acrid scent of fear, refused to thin. Dawn was a weak, bruised thing bleeding over the jagged peaks, but inside the ravaged clearing, no light could penetrate the suffocating gloom. Christopher was gone. Vanished into the same whispering woods that had swallowed William and Maya, leaving behind only the chilling echo of his betrayal. His confession, a venomous unraveling of years of festering resentment, still hung in the air like a phantom limb, a grotesque mockery of the friendships we had once cherished.
My hands trembled as I gripped the rough bark of an ancient oak, the coarse texture a grounding anchor in the swirling chaos of my thoughts. Gary, his face a mask of grim exhaustion, was methodically tending to Nancy, who sat huddled against a fallen log, her eyes wide and vacant, lost in a private horror. Her earlier composure, that steely pragmatization I’d so admired, had shattered like glass under the weight of Christopher’s monstrous revelation. The carefully constructed facade had crumbled, revealing the raw, quivering vulnerability beneath.
"Sean," Gary's voice was a low growl, laced with a fatigue that went bone-deep. "You need to rest. We all do."
