The air in the clearing felt thick, heavy with unspoken fears and the metallic tang of dread. We huddled around the dying embers of the campfire, the flames doing little to push back the encroaching darkness, or the darkness that had settled within us. Another one gone. William. His boisterous laughter, his impulsive energy, his sheer *presence*… extinguished. And with him, another layer of certainty had been ripped away, leaving us raw and exposed.
I watched Nancy, her normally composed features etched with a weariness that went beyond mere fatigue. She was trying to hold it together, for all of us, but I could see the subtle tremor in her hands as she stirred the weak tea, the way her gaze darted to the shadowed treeline every few seconds. She was fighting her own battle, the one she never spoke of, the one that threatened to drown her when the panic rose. I knew that feeling, the desperate clawing for air, the world narrowing to a single, suffocating point. It was a fear I understood all too well, the primal terror of being utterly alone.
Gary sat apart, his broad shoulders hunched, his eyes fixed on the ground. He was a man of action, of practical solutions, but here, his skills felt useless. What good was a knot when the thread of our lives was being so cruelly snipped? He’d proposed splitting up, a desperate gambit to find help, and I’d seen the flicker of desperation in his eyes, the echo of a past mistake he carried like a shroud. He was trying to be the protector, the strong one, but I sensed a deep well of regret beneath his stoic facade.
