Nancy, despite her own anxieties, takes charge, trying to maintain order. Her level-headedness is a beacon, but Sean wonders if her calm is a sign of true composure or a calculated act.
The flickering firelight did little to push back the encroaching darkness that pressed in on our small clearing. It had been hours since we’d last seen William, hours since the initial panic had given way to a gnawing dread that settled heavy in our chests. The silence, punctuated only by the crackle of burning wood and the rustle of unseen things in the undergrowth, was more terrifying than any scream. It was a silence that screamed of absence.
Nancy, bless her, was trying to be the anchor. Her face, usually so open and easy to read, was a mask of carefully constructed calm. She moved with a quiet efficiency, tending to the fire, checking the meager supplies we’d managed to salvage, her gaze sweeping over each of us as if trying to gauge our collective state of mind. It was a look I recognized, a look I’d seen her wear when her own anxieties threatened to overwhelm her, but this was different. This was outward-facing, a deliberate projection of strength.
“We need to think,” she said, her voice steady, though a faint tremor betrayed the effort it took. “Panicking won’t help anyone. We need a plan.”
