Christopher, outwardly helpful and reassuring, tries to unite the group. His charm masks a manipulative nature. Sean observes his subtle attempts to redirect suspicion and control the narrative.
The air in the clearing felt heavy, thick with the unspoken questions and the raw, gnawing fear that had settled over us like a shroud. William was gone. Maya was gone. Two of our number, vanished into the suffocating silence of the woods, leaving behind only the chilling echo of their absence. Gary’s grim proposal from the night before – to barricade ourselves in, to wait out whatever malevolent force stalked us – seemed less like a desperate measure and more like the only sane option. But even as the thought solidified, a different voice, smooth and reassuring, cut through the tension.
Christopher. He stood near the dying embers of last night’s fire, his face etched with a carefully crafted sorrow that somehow managed to look both genuine and rehearsed. He was already moving, not with Gary’s gruff efficiency, but with a sort of elegant purpose. He was the one who’d found Maya. The one who’d brought us the news of William. And now, he was the one offering comfort.
“We can’t just sit here and fall apart,” he said, his voice carrying easily across the small space. He looked at each of us, his gaze lingering for a fraction of a second longer on Nancy and then myself. “We need to stick together. More than ever.”
