The air in the glade hung thick and sweet with the scent of pine and damp earth, a stark contrast to the cloying, metallic tang of fear that now prickled Clara’s skin. She clutched the smooth, cool stone of the Sunstone tighter, its faint warmth a comforting pulse against her palm. Beside her, Elias, the traveler with the kind eyes and the ready smile, shifted his weight, his gaze flicking from the Sunstone to the dense undergrowth surrounding them.

“Are you certain this is the place, Clara?” he asked, his voice a low rumble that did little to soothe her burgeoning unease. “The hermit spoke of a hidden grove, but this… this looks like any other patch of woodland.”

Clara nodded, her eyes scanning the ancient oaks that ringed the clearing. “He said it would be marked by a fallen elder tree, its roots reaching towards the sky like grasping fingers. And look,” she pointed, her finger trembling slightly, “there it is.” Indeed, a colossal oak lay prostrate, its gnarled roots upturned, a testament to some long-ago storm.
