The air in the clearing hummed with a deceptive tranquility. Sunlight dappled through the thick canopy overhead, painting shifting patterns on the moss-covered ground. Clara, her heart still thrumming with the hermit’s cryptic pronouncements, felt a prickle of unease that had nothing to do with the deep woods. It was a subtle discord, a discordant note in the otherwise harmonious symphony of nature. She clutched the hermit’s worn pouch, the weight of the smooth, cool stone within a constant reminder of the impossible task before her.
She had been tracing the faint game trail, the hermit’s vague directions about a “place where the river weeps” echoing in her mind, when the sound of approaching footsteps broke the silence. Her hand instinctively went to the small, sharpened twig she kept tucked into her belt, a meager defense against the unknown. She peered through the dense undergrowth, her breath catching in her throat.
A figure emerged from the trees, silhouetted against the bright light. He was tall, dressed in practical but well-made traveling clothes, a worn leather satchel slung across his shoulder. His dark hair was neatly tied back, and a friendly smile played on his lips as he surveyed the clearing. He looked, Clara thought, utterly out of place in this wild, untamed corner of the forest.
