Chapter 6
A New Kind of Fortune
Leo chooses to stay with Sparky, embracing a life of fun and silliness. He trades his lost fortune for a new adventure, perhaps even helping Sparky find a truly spectacular hat.
Leo stood on the cobbled street, the grime tickling his bare toes. The grand, imposing doors of his mansion, once a symbol of his boundless pebble collection, now felt like a prison gate slamming shut. He’d been thrown out, louder than a flock of startled pigeons, all because his wails of pebble-bereavement had disturbed the delicate porcelain of his parents’ afternoon tea. He sniffled, a sound more pathetic than a deflated balloon. His meticulously organized pebble boxes, his shimmering hoard of smooth, grey, and occasionally sparkly rocks, were gone. Vanished! Poof! Not just any juggling, mind you. He was juggling three overripe bananas, a bright red rubber chicken that let out a pathetic squeak with each toss, and, most surprisingly, a single, slightly wilted daisy.
“Hoo-hoo!” Sparky boomed, his voice like a friendly foghorn. He caught a banana with a flourish, narrowly missing his own nose. “What’s this? A little statue of sorrow? A miniature monument to melancholy? Such exquisite pathos, my young friend! Truly, the streets are crying out for such artistry!”
