The Richest Kind of Rich

Through Sparky's laughter and friendship, Leo discovers a different kind of treasure. He realizes that happiness and connection are worth more than all the shiny pebbles in the world.

Leo, still sniffling, found himself perched on a wobbly crate outside Sparky’s impossibly colorful caravan. The afternoon sun, which had previously seemed like a harsh spotlight on his misery, now felt warm and friendly, glinting off something other than his lost pebbles. Sparky, meanwhile, was a whirlwind of shimmering scarves and clanking cymbals. He was attempting to teach a flock of pigeons how to juggle, a feat that mostly involved scattering breadcrumbs and eliciting delighted coos from the birds.

"See, Leo, my boy!" Sparky boomed, his voice like a cheerful foghorn. "It's all about the rhythm! The pidge-pidge-pidge of the bread, the clatter-clatter-clatter of the cymbals! You gotta feel the performance!" He gestured wildly with a cymbal, nearly decapitating a passing ladybug.

Leo watched, a tiny, bewildered frown still etched on his face. He’d tried to explain the concept of a perfectly organized pebble collection to Sparky earlier that morning. He’d even drawn a diagram in the dust with a stick, showing the meticulously sorted rows of grey, speckled, and gloriously shiny pebbles. Sparky had just tilted his head, a dandelion tucked behind one ear, and declared, "Ah, yes! A very important map of… very important dust!"
