Chapter 8
Homeward Bound
With a heavy heart but a clear decision, Leo chooses to return. He thanks Elias for his wisdom and for sharing his truth. Standing in a secluded spot, Leo clutches the Chronos Locket, whispering a farewell to his ancestor and the era he briefly inhabited. He focuses his intent on home, on his own time. The artifact glows, the familiar disorienting sensation returns, and the sounds and smells of the past fade. He feels the pull of the temporal currents, the journey back to the present commencing, carrying with him the indelible imprint of Elias Thorne.
The weight of Elias Thorne’s words settled over me, heavy as the ancient stones of this battlefield. His truth, laid bare like the bones of fallen soldiers, was a legacy I hadn't bargained for, a lineage I now carried with a mixture of awe and sorrow. He hadn’t been a simple farmer or a quiet craftsman, as I’d half-imagined. He had been a protector, a man forged in the crucible of conflict, his hands calloused by both plow and sword, his heart burdened by the choices he’d made to keep his people safe. And I, Leo, his descendant, had been thrust into the very heart of the storm he’d weathered.
But the storm had passed, at least for him. For me, the present beckoned, a siren song of familiar beds and the comforting scent of my mother’s cooking. The choice, though agonizing, had been made. I couldn’t stay. This was Elias’s time, his war, his burden. Mine was to learn from it, to carry its echoes, but not to live within its shadow.
"Thank you, Elias," I managed, my voice rough with unshed tears. The words felt inadequate, a paltry offering for the wisdom and the truth he had bestowed upon me. He simply nodded, his gaze steady, a silent acknowledgment of the unspoken bond between us. He understood. He knew the pull of home, the yearning for a life unmarred by the constant threat of violence.
