Chapter 7

A Crossroads in Time

Elias, moved by Leo's journey and the echo of their shared bloodline, offers him a choice: remain in this past, to learn from him and perhaps find a new purpose, or return to his own time. Leo is torn. He feels a deep connection to Elias and the raw authenticity of this era, but the longing for his family, his own bed, and the familiar comforts of home are strong. He grapples with the immense responsibility of his ancestor's legacy and the potential consequences of staying, weighing the allure of the past against the pull of his future.

The air in the Thorne cottage, usually thick with the scent of woodsmoke and drying herbs, now seemed to hum with a different kind of energy. It was a quiet hum, a vibration of unspoken possibilities, and it settled over Leo like a warm, heavy blanket. Elias Thorne, his great-great-great-grandfather, sat across the worn oak table, his gaze steady, his hands calloused and strong, resting on the scarred wood. He had spoken of the choice Leo faced, not with the gruffness that had initially intimidated Leo, but with a quiet solemnity that lent his words an almost sacred weight.

“You have seen what it means to carry the Thorne name in these times, Leo,” Elias said, his voice a low rumble. “You have faced the fire and the fear, and you have not broken. That is a rare thing, in any age.” He paused, his eyes, the same startling blue as Leo’s own, seemed to bore into him, searching for something deep within. “You could stay. Learn the ways of this land, the strength that lies in the earth and in the heart. There is much I could teach you, of survival, of honor, of what it truly means to be a man.”

Leo swallowed, the words catching in his throat. Stay? The thought was both exhilarating and terrifying. He had come seeking a ghost, a name in a dusty journal, and instead, he had found a living, breathing man, his own blood, a man of incredible resilience and quiet strength. He had seen Elias in action, had witnessed his courage, his unwavering commitment to his people, his fierce protectiveness. And in return, Elias had offered him a place, a chance to learn, to belong. A sense of belonging, a feeling Leo hadn't realized he was missing until it was offered.
