Chapter 4
Beneath a Stormy Sky
The battle erupts, a terrifying maelstrom of noise and violence. Leo, utterly out of his depth, scrambles for cover, the sergeant's harsh commands a distant echo. He witnesses firsthand the brutal reality of the historical conflict, far removed from the romanticized tales in books. His primary goal shifts from uncovering his ancestor's story to simply staying alive. He must use his wits and newfound courage to navigate the treacherous battlefield, all while desperately scanning the faces of the soldiers for any sign of the man he seeks.
The air, thick and heavy moments before, now ripped apart with a deafening roar. It wasn’t the distant rumble of thunder I’d grown accustomed to back home; this was a visceral, tearing sound that vibrated through my very bones. My ears rang, a dull throb that made it hard to distinguish the sergeant’s guttural shouts from the screams of men and the clang of metal. I was on my knees, the rough earth a sudden, unwelcome intimacy against my palms, a pathetic heap of a boy amidst a maelstrom of organized chaos. This wasn't an adventure. This was a nightmare painted in shades of blood and fear.
The sergeant, a bull of a man whose face seemed permanently etched with a grimace, had shoved me forward, his voice a gravelly rasp against my ear. "Get down, you useless whelp! You want to be a target?" His hand, calloused and rough as old leather, propelled me behind a low, hastily constructed barricade of splintered wood and packed earth. Men, their faces grim and determined, were crouched low, their muskets spitting fire and smoke. The smell of gunpowder, acrid and burning, stung my nostrils, a far cry from the sweet scent of my mother’s baking.
This was the battle. The one I’d read about in hushed tones, the one that had been a mere footnote in my history books, now unfolding before me in all its terrifying, brutal glory. The romanticized tales of valor and courage, of noble charges and glorious victories, evaporated like mist in the face of this raw, unadulterated violence. Men fell, not with dramatic flourishes, but with a choked gasp, a sudden crumpling of limbs, their bodies thudding to the ground with sickening finality. The ground beneath me shook with the impact of cannonballs, each explosion sending tremors through my small frame, a constant, gnawing fear coiling in my stomach.
