Sami's Scrutiny

The polished floor of the mayor’s grand hall gleamed under the light of a hundred beeswax candles, reflecting the opulent tapestries that adorned the walls. It was a far cry from the muddy fields and smoky encampments I’d grown accustomed to, a jarring return to a semblance of normalcy that felt almost as alien as the war itself. But the war, at least for now, was a distant rumble, a memory etched into my bones. This, this was a different kind of battle.

Mayor Senator, a man whose jowls seemed to sag with the weight of his own importance, had ushered me back into his opulent home with a perfunctory nod. His wife, Sami, however, had been a different story. She was a vision in emerald silk, her dark hair coiled in an intricate knot, her eyes like chips of polished obsidian that seemed to pierce right through me. From the moment she’d entered the room, her gaze had settled on me, a predator sizing up its prey.

“And this is the boy,” she’d announced, her voice a silken whip, devoid of any warmth. She circled me slowly, her nose slightly upturned, as if the very air I occupied was offensive. “The one the fates – or perhaps the *mayor’s* decree – have seen fit to bless with… this opportunity.”
