The air in Elias Thorne’s study was thick with a cloying scent, like ancient parchment and something metallic, something like fear. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of moonlight slicing through the grimy window, illuminating the room like a stage set for a morbid play. I clutched the worn leather-bound book, its pages feeling unnervingly warm against my palm. It was the source, the nexus of all the madness. Thorne, the architect of this inferno, sat across from me, his eyes glinting with a triumphant madness that chilled me to the bone. He’d been expecting me, of course. He always did.
"So, Detective Jack," Thorne’s voice was a silken rasp, laced with amusement. "You’ve finally found your way to the grand finale. I must admit, your persistence is… admirable. Though ultimately, futile."
I ignored the taunt, my gaze sweeping over the room. Stacks of books, arcane symbols etched into the walls, and a general aura of decay that seemed to emanate from Thorne himself. This was his sanctuary, his workshop of horrors. "It’s over, Thorne. You can’t keep doing this."
