The air in Elias Thorne’s study was thick with the scent of old paper and something else, something metallic and sharp, like blood mixed with ozone. It clung to the heavy velvet drapes, to the leather-bound tomes that lined the walls, to Thorne himself as he lounged in a wingback chair, a smirk playing on his lips. I’d found him through a tangled web of shell corporations and discreet inquiries, a ghost in the machine of the city, pulling strings from the shadows. He was the wielder, the puppet master of this macabre theatre.
“Detective Jack,” Thorne drawled, his voice a silken rasp that sent a shiver down my spine. “To what do I owe this… unexpected pleasure?” He gestured with a slender hand towards an empty chair, an invitation that felt more like a trap.
I remained standing, my gaze sweeping across the room, cataloging the details. The room was a monument to opulence and decay, a reflection of Thorne himself. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating a collection of antique weaponry on the wall, each piece gleaming with a sinister promise.
