The sterile scent of antiseptic and stale fear clung to Eleanor Vance’s hospital room like a second skin. It was a smell I’d become far too familiar with in my line of work, but this time, it was laced with something else, something…unnatural. Eleanor, a woman whose delicate hands usually danced across canvases, now lay trembling beneath starched white sheets, her eyes wide and vacant, fixed on a point beyond the grimy window.
“She keeps seeing them, Detective,” the nurse, a weary woman named Brenda, whispered, her voice barely audible above the rhythmic beep of a monitor. “The spiders. Everywhere.”
Spiders. Eleanor Vance, a celebrated artist known for her vibrant, sprawling cityscapes, had apparently developed a crippling arachnophobia. The official report stated she’d been found in her studio, a tangled mess of canvases and overturned paint pots, screaming, convinced her latest masterpiece was crawling with eight-legged horrors. The paramedics had found no actual arachnids, of course, but Eleanor’s terror was as real as the sweat beading on her forehead.
