The air in the archive had a peculiar weight to it, thick with the dust of forgotten ages and the faint, metallic tang of something akin to ozone. It clung to my tongue, a constant reminder of the unseen forces I was beginning to suspect hummed beneath the surface of everything. Arthur’s study, with its chaotic symphony of stacked tomes and scattered parchments, was a sanctuary, a place where the clamor of the outside world, the insistent drumming of doubt, receded. He had called me here, his voice a low murmur over the crackling line, a summons I couldn’t ignore.

“You feel it, don’t you?” he’d asked, his voice barely a whisper as I entered, the heavy oak door groaning shut behind me like a sigh. He didn’t look up from the ancient, leather-bound volume spread before him, its pages brittle and yellowed, covered in script that seemed to writhe with a life of its own. It was the text I’d seen glimpses of in my dreams, the one that pulsed with the same strange geometry as the symbol that had haunted my waking hours.

“Feel what, Arthur?” I asked, my own voice raspy, unused to the hushed reverence of the room. I traced the faint outline of the symbol on a dusty table, a phantom ache in my fingertips.
