The hum started subtly, a low thrumming beneath the surface of my awareness, like a distant, forgotten engine. It had been building for days, a disquieting counterpoint to the newfound clarity that had settled over me since I’d begun to truly *see* the patterns. It was the sound of a system resisting, of an equilibrium being disturbed. And it was coming for me.

It began with the shadows. Not the natural deepening of twilight, but a deliberate, creeping darkness that seemed to leach the color from the periphery of my vision. Streetlights flickered erratically, their steady beams stuttering as if struggling against an unseen force. The familiar cityscape, once a canvas of predictable order, now felt charged with a latent menace, its very architecture whispering warnings.

My apartment, my sanctuary, no longer felt safe. The geometric symbol, the one that had first pricked my curiosity, now seemed to shimmer on the edges of my furniture, a phantom etching. I traced its lines with my finger, the cool wood offering no comfort. It was a key, I knew, but the lock it opened was guarded.
