The air in Elder Maeve's cottage always smelled of dried herbs and secrets, but today it was thick with a different kind of dust – the unsettled kind that settled on your skin and made you itch. I traced the patterns on the wooden table, my gaze darting between the worn pages of Maeve’s ancient book and the half-eaten blueberry parfait sitting accusingly in front of me. It was the same sickly sweet confection I’d seen everywhere, the ones that now made my stomach churn. Silas had brought this one, a gesture of comfort, he’d said, after our last tense conversation. Comfort. The word tasted like ashes.

My fingers trembled as I flipped through the book. Maeve had been unusually quiet, her eyes holding a deep, ancient sadness that mirrored the shadowed corners of her home. She’d shown me symbols, constellations of regret, and spoke in hushed tones of a force that thrived on the cracks in our hearts. The Valpyr. And the parfaits… the parfaits were its conduits.

“He’s been to see them, hasn’t he?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. The ‘them’ referred to the townsfolk, the ones who’d recently fallen into deeper shades of despair, their eyes losing their spark, their laughter becoming brittle. Silas, with his easy charm and ready smile, was always the first to offer solace, always the first to suggest a sweet treat, a distraction.
