The sugary sweetness of the blueberry parfait, once a balm to my soul, now coated my tongue with a bitter, metallic tang. It was the tang of guilt, a flavor I was becoming all too familiar with. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in my mind, each syllable a tiny shard of ice against my already frayed nerves. "The Valpyr feeds on regret, Anya. It thrives in the shadows of our choices, in the moments we wish we could undo." And I had so many moments I wished I could undo.

It started subtly, a flicker of unease when I saw the glistening purple layers of the parfait, a dish that used to bring such simple joy. Then came the whispers, not from outside, but from within. A tiny voice, insidious and familiar, asking if I really deserved this sweetness. Hadn’t I been selfish? Hadn’t I acted without thinking? The questions gnawed at me, turning the innocent dessert into a mirror reflecting my own perceived failings.

I remember the day Silas had brought me the parfait. His smile was so genuine, his eyes so full of concern. "You look troubled, Anya," he'd said, his voice a low, soothing rumble. "You need something to lift your spirits. This is from the new baker down the lane. They say it’s divine." And I, so eager to believe in kindness, had devoured it. Now, the memory felt like a betrayal. Had he known? Had he known this delectable treat was a trap, a carefully constructed lure for the Valpyr’s insatiable hunger?
