Elder Maeve reveals the existence of the 'Valpyr,' a parasitic force feeding on negative emotions, and its link to the '11/11 Awakening.'
The air in Elder Maeve’s cottage always smelled of dried herbs and something else, something like old parchment and forgotten secrets. Today, it felt heavier, thicker, as if the very dust motes dancing in the slivers of sunlight were burdened with unspoken words. Elder Maeve sat across from me, her hands, gnarled like ancient roots, resting on the worn wooden table. Her eyes, usually twinkling with warmth, were shadowed, holding a depth of sorrow that made my own heart ache.
“Anya,” she began, her voice a low rumble, like pebbles shifting in a deep stream, “the world you know, the one that bloomed after the ‘11/11 Awakening,’ it is not what it appears to be.”
I nodded, my gaze fixed on the intricate patterns woven into her shawl. The ‘11/11 Awakening’ had been a strange time. One moment, everything was normal, the next, the world felt… off. Colors seemed a little duller, laughter a little less bright, and a constant hum of unease settled over everything, like a damp blanket. And the blueberry parfaits. They were everywhere, a ubiquitous symbol of comfort, yet they always left me with a hollow feeling, a strange mixture of sweetness and something unsettling.
