The morning sun, a shy blush against the bruised sky, felt different. Not the same brittle, uncertain light that had filtered through the fog of the Awakening, but a gentler, more hopeful glow. It painted the world in softer hues, a balm to eyes that had seen too much darkness. My own eyes, I knew, were changed. The naive sparkle was gone, replaced by a quiet watchfulness, a deep understanding that things were never quite as sweet as they seemed.
I stood on the balcony of my small apartment, the same one I’d huddled in during the worst of it, and breathed in the crisp air. It carried the scent of blooming jasmine and something else, something earthy and clean, like rain on dry soil. It was the smell of a world beginning to mend, a world that had stared into the abyss and decided, with a collective, shaky breath, to step back.
Down in the street, people were moving. Not with the frantic, hurried steps of those trying to outrun their own shadows, but with a steady rhythm. There was laughter, real laughter, not the hollow echoes that had once passed for joy. Children chased pigeons in the square, their shrieks of delight unmarred by the insidious whispers of regret. It was a new normal, fragile perhaps, but undeniably present.
