The air in Elder Maeve's cottage, usually thick with the comforting scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke, now felt lighter, almost effervescent. It was a change I’d been chasing for what felt like an eternity, a delicate shift from the heavy blanket of unease that had settled over our world since the 11/11 Awakening. Maeve sat by the hearth, her silver hair catching the firelight, a gentle smile gracing her lips. The blueberry parfaits, once a source of such dread, now sat on a small table between us, their layers of creamy custard and bright blueberries looking innocent and, dare I say, delicious.
"They don't taste like shadows anymore, do they?" Maeve’s voice was soft, like rustling leaves.
I picked up a spoon, my hand steady for the first time in weeks. The vibrant blue of the berries seemed to shimmer, no longer holding the same sinister allure. "No," I admitted, my voice a little husky. "They taste… sweet. Just sweet." I took a spoonful, letting the cool custard melt on my tongue, the burst of blueberry a familiar, comforting sensation. It was real. The taste wasn't tainted by the creeping dread, the whispers of regret that the Valpyr had spun into every sweet treat, every shared moment.
