Maeve's Sacrifice
Elder Maeve reveals her own past connection to the Valpyr and makes a significant sacrifice to protect Anya and weaken the entity.
The air in Elder Maeve’s cottage had always tasted of dried herbs and ancient stories, a comforting balm against the unsettling strangeness of the world outside. But today, it felt thick, heavy, like a storm brewing just beyond the windowpanes. Maeve, usually so serene, her eyes like deep, calm pools, was agitated. She paced the worn floorboards, her hands twisting in the fabric of her simple dress. I watched her, my own heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against my ribs. The blueberry parfaits, the ones I’d thought were just sweet treats, had shown me their true, terrifying nature. They were conduits, tiny vessels of despair, feeding the Valpyr. And Silas, with his charming smile and helpful words, had been guiding me right into its waiting maw. Maeve knew. She had to.
“It’s worse than I feared, Anya,” Maeve finally said, her voice a low murmur that barely disturbed the dust motes dancing in the slivers of sunlight. “The parfaits… they are a symptom, not the cause. A way for the Valpyr to spread its influence, to harvest the regret that festers in so many hearts since the 11/11 Awakening.”
I nodded, remembering the chilling whispers I’d heard, the icy tendrils of doubt that had snaked around my own thoughts when I’d held one of those deceptively innocent desserts. “Silas… he knew. He was using me.” The words tasted like ash.
