Chapter 6
The Elder's Insight
Elder Maeve, the pack's lore keeper, observes Luna with knowing eyes. She recognizes elements of an ancient prophecy, but her words to Ryan are cryptic and cautious.
The air in the pack house had grown heavy, thick with unspoken questions and the lingering, unsettling scent of sandalwood and vanilla that clung to her. She sat across from me in the main hall, a silent, enigmatic presence that filled the space with an aura I couldn't quite decipher. Danger and allure, a potent, confusing cocktail. My instincts, usually so clear, were a jumbled mess. Silas, ever the pragmatist, hovered at the edge of the room, his gaze fixed on her, a muscle ticking in his jaw. He knew as little as I did, but his suspicion was a palpable thing, a low hum beneath the surface of our strained quiet.
Elder Maeve, however, watched her with a different kind of intensity. Her ancient eyes, usually clouded with the mists of time, held a sharp, almost predatory focus. She sat in her usual worn armchair by the hearth, a shawl draped over her shoulders, but her stillness was anything but passive. It was the stillness of a hawk before it strikes, or a wolf before it pounces. I’d seen that look before, only when she was poring over the oldest scrolls, deciphering fragments of forgotten lore. A shiver traced its way down my spine, a primal unease that had nothing to do with the chill in the air and everything to do with the silent communion between the elder and our guest.
She, the stranger, met Maeve’s gaze for a long moment, her expression unreadable. There was no fear in her eyes, no deference. Only a quiet acknowledgment, perhaps even a flicker of recognition. It was enough to make my own heart pound a little faster. What did Maeve see? What did she know?
