The air in my chambers felt thick, heavy with a silence that was anything but peaceful. It was the stillness before a storm, the held breath of a forest before a wildfire. I paced the length of the room, the polished oak floor cool beneath my bare feet, my thoughts a tangled mess of sandalwood, vanilla, and a woman I’d found on the edge of my territory. Ori. The name felt foreign on my tongue, yet strangely familiar, like a melody I’d heard in a dream. She was an enigma, a puzzle piece that didn’t seem to belong to any set I knew. Small things, easily dismissed as carelessness or prank by a younger wolf, but the frequency and the unsettling nature of them were beginning to fray the pack’s nerves.

Silas, ever the pragmatist, was quick to dismiss it. “Stress, Ryan,” he’d said, his voice gruff as we stood by the training grounds, the morning sun glinting off his silver chain. “The pack is unsettled by the stranger. It’s natural.”
