The world tilted, not with the gentle sway of a rocking boat, but with the violent lurch of a collapsing building. Elara gasped, her eyes flying open, but the darkness was no longer the comforting void of her room. It was a swirling, inky expanse, shot through with streaks of phosphorescent green, like a bruised sky. Her bed, her familiar, worn quilt, had vanished. Instead, she felt the unsettlingly soft give of moss beneath her, damp and cool against her skin. The air thrummed with a low, resonant hum, the same sound that had been a constant companion in her sleepless nights, now amplified, a monstrous heartbeat pulsing through the very ground.

Panic, cold and sharp, pricked at her. This wasn't a dream. Or rather, it was a dream bleeding into something else, something tangibly, terrifyingly real. The scent of damp earth and something sickly sweet, like overripe fruit, filled her nostrils. She sat up, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Towering, gnarled trees, their bark like the scales of ancient dragons, clawed at the bruised sky. Their branches, skeletal and twisted, dripped with the same luminous green dew that painted the air. And scattered amongst the roots, pulsing with an inner light, were the flowers. Not just one or two, but hundreds, thousands, their petals unfurling like silent screams, each one a miniature sun in the suffocating darkness. The Bloom.

A whisper, soft as moth wings, brushed against her ear. "Lost, little one?"
