The scent of expensive cologne and something acrid, like burnt sugar, still clung to the air in my father’s study. It was a smell that had always made my stomach clench, a preamble to his rages, a promise of the fire he could unleash with a single glare. Now, it was simply the smell of death. Elena had cleaned the worst of it, of course. Her efficiency was terrifyingly precise, like a surgeon’s scalpel. But the lingering phantom odors were a constant reminder, a ghostly echo of the man who had made my life a gilded cage.
Elena moved with a quiet grace that belied the violence she carried within. She was packing a small duffel bag, her movements economical, deliberate. The soft click of a zipper was the only sound in the cavernous room, a stark contrast to the cacophony of my own thoughts. My mind, a restless sea, churned with questions, each one a wave threatening to drown me. Who was she, really? What had possessed her to do this? And why, oh why, was my heart beating a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a traitorous drum corps celebrating her presence?
“Are you ready?” Her voice, a low alto, sliced through the silence. It was laced with an impatience I was beginning to understand, a need to keep moving, to shed the skins of past lives like a snake.
