Fear, raw and primal, had been my first companion, a cold seep that had paralyzed me as I stared at the lifeless form of Giovanni Armstrong. But fear, I was quickly learning, was a fleeting guest in this new, terrifying reality. It was being replaced by something far more insidious, something that coiled in my gut like a venomous snake.

Her name was a whisper on my lips, a forbidden incantation. She had been there, a vision of dark grace amidst the carnage, her eyes – those impossibly deep pools of obsidian – had met mine. And in that instant, something had shifted. The world tilted, the solid ground beneath my feet dissolving into an unnerving abyss.
