Barry Hallow stood before me, his face a mask of grim determination, the glint of the metal in his hand catching the dim, flickering light. It was a gun, cold and menacing, pointed not at Elena, but at me. Or perhaps, at both of us.
“You don’t understand,” I choked out, the words rasping in my throat. My hands trembled, clasped together as if in prayer, though I hadn’t prayed in years. Not since… not since before. “She didn’t do it. Not this time.”
