The air in the warehouse hung thick and heavy, a cloying mix of damp concrete and something metallic, something that pricked at my nostrils and tightened in my chest. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a trapped bird desperate for escape. Barry Hallow stood before me, his face a mask of grim determination, the glint of the metal in his hand catching the dim, flickering light. It was a gun, cold and menacing, pointed not at Elena, but at me. Or perhaps, at both of us.

“You don’t understand,” I choked out, the words rasping in my throat. My hands trembled, clasped together as if in prayer, though I hadn’t prayed in years. Not since… not since before. “She didn’t do it. Not this time.”

Barry’s eyes, usually so sharp and watchful, were clouded with a dangerous certainty. He was Giovanni’s cousin, a fact that had surfaced in the chaotic days following my father’s death, a twisted thread in the tapestry of my life. He’d always been a shadow in our lives, a presence I’d learned to ignore, like the ever-present threat of my father’s rage. Now, he was the threat.
