The world outside the opulent prison Elena had crafted for me felt like a distant, buzzing hum. It was a place I’d once desperately wanted to escape, but now, the very thought of its vastness, its indifference, sent a cold tremor through me. Inside these walls, within Elena’s orbit, there was a twisted kind of safety. A dangerous, intoxicating illusion.
My reflection in the antique vanity mirror was a stranger. The girl who’d cowered in the shadow of her father’s rage, the girl who’d stumbled upon his bloody demise, was gone. Replaced by someone… softer, perhaps, but infinitely more fragile. The dark circles under my eyes were permanent fixtures now, testament to nights spent wrestling with the phantoms that danced at the edges of my vision. They weren't just figments of my illness anymore; they were amplified by the gnawing guilt, the suffocating fear, and the bewildering bloom of something that felt terrifyingly like love.
Elena. The word itself was a melody and a poison. She was the reason I was still breathing, the reason my heart still beat, however erratically. She was also the reason I felt like I was unraveling, thread by thread.
