The air in the train carriage was thick with a scent I couldn't quite name – a metallic tang of departing journeys, mixed with the stale perfume of too many lives pressed together for too long. Outside, the familiar greens and browns of my homeland blurred into an impressionistic smear, a watercolor painting left out in the rain. Each passing field, each familiar curve of the road, felt like a hand reaching out to pull me back, a silent plea to reconsider. We’d stood on the edge of the Baltic Sea, the wind whipping our hair, and he’d promised forever. But forever, it turned out, was a fragile thing, easily broken by the weight of unspoken fears and the relentless march of practicality. He’d wanted roots, a life firmly planted in the soil of Ketvergiai. I, on the other hand, felt the insistent tug of the horizon, a yearning for something I couldn’t define, a whisper from lands unseen.
