The Baltic Sea, that vast, grey expanse that had always been the backdrop to my childhood, suddenly felt like a living, breathing entity, its moods mirroring the turmoil in my own heart. It was the summer after my seventeenth birthday, a summer that was supposed to be filled with the easy joy of long days and the sweet ache of first love. Instead, it was a summer etched in sorrow, a season when the world I knew cracked open and revealed its raw, fragile underbelly.
Grandmother Elena had been fading for a while, like a watercolor left out in the sun. Her stories, once vibrant tapestries woven with the magic of the old world, had become fainter, her voice a whisper carried on the wind. We all knew it was coming, but knowing and accepting are two very different things. The day she finally slipped away, it felt as though a vital thread had snapped, leaving a gaping hole not just in our small cottage, but in the very fabric of Ketvergiai.
I found her by the window, her gaze fixed on the distant horizon where the sea met the sky. Her hand, gnarled and delicate, rested on the worn wooden sill. The scent of dried herbs, her signature perfume, still clung to the air, a bittersweet reminder of her presence. I sat beside her, my own small hand finding hers, and for a long time, we just sat in the quiet, the only sound the distant murmur of the waves.
