The salty air, a constant companion of my childhood, still found its way to me, even here, across the vast, churning expanse of the Irish Sea. It wasn't the same air, of course. This carried the damp, earthy scent of peat and moss, the distant tang of sheep, and the ever-present breath of the Atlantic, wilder, perhaps, than the gentler sighs of the Baltic. But sometimes, when the wind shifted just so, or when the mist rolled in thick and white, clinging to the hillsides like a forgotten shawl, I could almost taste the familiar brine of Ketvergiai. It was a phantom taste, a memory that lived not in my tongue but in the marrow of my bones.

My son, Liam, was chasing a flock of stubborn sheep across a field not far from our cottage. His laughter, a bright, untamed sound, carried on the wind, a melody entirely his own, yet woven with echoes of a language I rarely spoke aloud anymore. He was a child of this island, his eyes the clear blue of an Irish sky, his hair the sun-bleached gold of a Lithuanian summer. He was my bridge, my living, breathing testament to the fact that journeys, no matter how far they stretched, never truly ended. They simply transformed, like water into mist, like seeds into forests, like a life lived in one place into a life carried within.

I sat on the worn stone wall, the rough texture a comfort beneath my hands, and watched him. He stumbled, then righted himself with the unthinking grace of a creature born to this land. I remembered my own childhood, the way I’d stumbled through the tall grass of our village meadows, chasing fireflies, listening to the rustle of unseen things in the ancient forest. Grandmother Elena, her face a roadmap of a life lived fully, had always said I had the 'seeing eyes,' that I noticed the shimmer of magic in the mundane, the pulse of life in the stillness. She’d spoken of the blood that remembers, a current running through our lineage, connecting us to the earth, to the stars, to the whispers of those who came before.
