Chapter 5

The Hunter's Gaze

With renewed determination, Arthur rushes towards the door. The buzzing seems to intensify, the shadows in the periphery deepen. A primal fear grips him as he senses he is no longer alone.

The buzzing had become a physical presence, a constant hum that vibrated in Arthur’s bones, a relentless companion to the endless yellow. He had lost count of the days, or perhaps it was weeks. Time had warped into a meaningless construct in this suffocating expanse. Each turn of the maze-like corridors brought only more of the same: the same sickly yellow walls, the same stained carpet underfoot, the same low, incessant drone that felt like a physical assault on his senses. He had pleaded, he had screamed, he had wept, but the yellow had absorbed it all, offering no solace, no response.

His once-observant eyes, so quick to note the dappled sunlight on the park path, now scanned the walls with a desperate, almost frantic intensity. He was searching for anything, a crack, a stain, a deviation from the oppressive uniformity. His peace-loving nature, so easily disrupted by a distant siren or a boisterous child in his old life, had been systematically dismantled by this place. The constant sensory overload, once a subtle unease, had become the very air he breathed, and it was slowly, inexorably, poisoning him.

He remembered the park, the gentle breeze, the chirping of birds. It felt like a dream from another life, a life he could no longer access. His determination, once fueled by the hope of escape, had curdled into a grim, primal instinct for survival. He ate the strange, bland sustenance that sometimes appeared, drank the lukewarm, metallic-tasting water that dripped from unseen sources, and he walked. He walked until his legs ached, until his mind threatened to unravel completely, only to find himself back in a place that was both familiar and terrifyingly alien.
