Chapter 4
A Flicker of Hope
Despair begins to set in, but then Arthur spots it – a door. A stark contrast to the yellow, it promises escape, a lifeline in this maddening dimension. Hope surges, a dangerous emotion here.
The hum. It was always the hum. Sometimes Arthur could almost pretend it wasn’t there, a faint, high-pitched whine that seemed to seep from the very fabric of the yellow walls. He’d learned, through countless agonizing cycles of pacing and staring, that pretending was a fragile art. Today, the hum felt louder, more insistent, gnawing at the edges of his consciousness like a persistent insect. He pressed his palms to his ears, a futile gesture that only amplified the sound within his skull. It was a sound that promised nothing but more yellow, more walls, more endless, suffocating sameness.
He stopped his aimless wandering, leaning his forehead against the cool, slightly slick surface of the wall. Where was he? The question had lost all meaning, a relic of a time when answers were possible, when the world made sense. Now, there was only the yellow, the hum, and the gnawing emptiness in his gut. He hadn’t eaten in… he couldn’t remember. Time had become a slippery, amorphous thing, stretching and contracting with the whim of his own frayed nerves. He’d tried marking the walls, scratching crude lines with his fingernails, but the sheer scale of the place rendered his efforts pathetic. Each corridor looked identical, each turn a replay of the last.
Despair was a heavy shroud, one he’d been trying to shrug off for what felt like an eternity. He’d shouted, he’d wept, he’d even tried to reason with the walls, his voice a ragged whisper lost in the vastness. But the yellow offered no comfort, no response, only its relentless, silent stare. The buzzing lights above, rows upon rows stretching into the hazy distance, were the only witnesses to his slow unravelling. They flickered sometimes, a brief, almost imperceptible dip in their oppressive glow, and each flicker sent a jolt of anxiety through him. Was he hallucinating? Was the yellow itself beginning to warp and shift, or was it just his mind, finally succumbing to the suffocating monotony?
