Arthur Penhaligon, a man whose primary occupation seemed to be the meticulous dissection of his own thought processes, found himself once again locked in a staring contest with the Blank Page. It was a formidable opponent, as always, its pristine expanse a silent, smug reminder of his inadequacy. He’d tried everything. He’d brewed coffee strong enough to strip paint, listened to whale songs played backwards, and even attempted to channel the muse by wearing a tin foil hat shaped like a croissant. The croissant hat, he’d discovered, mostly just made him feel faintly ridiculous and attracted a bewildered pigeon to his windowsill.

The ‘Absurd Idea,’ that unruly child of his subconscious, was still bouncing around his skull like a rogue pinball, a chaotic constellation of half-formed metaphors and nonsensical connections. It had sprung, as such things often do, from an unlikely source: the excruciating agony of stubbing his toe on the leg of his desk. The initial jolt had been so profound, so utterly incapacitating, that for a glorious, pain-addled moment, the Blank Page had receded, replaced by a searing vision. He’d seen, with startling clarity, the existential dread of a single sock lost in the laundry abyss, its mate forever searching, a mournful ode to separation and the relentless march of entropy.

He’d scrawled it down, a feverish outpouring of sock-related angst, the words tumbling out in a desperate, unedited rush. But as the adrenaline faded and the throbbing in his toe subsided, the sock metaphor began to feel… well, a bit thin. And slightly absurd. Which, for Arthur, was a rather low bar. He’d then attempted to link it to the migratory patterns of wildebeest, arguing that the sock’s plight was an allegory for the primal urge to stay with the herd, even when faced with overwhelming odds. This, he conceded, was a stretch. A very, very long, elastic-band-snapping stretch.
