The air in the abandoned subway station was thick with the smell of damp concrete and something metallic, something that hinted at decay and forgotten lives. Rain, a constant companion in Seoul, drummed a relentless rhythm on the metal roof far above, a hollow echo in the cavernous space. Detective Kang Min-jae stood at the mouth of the tunnel, his silhouette stark against the dim emergency lighting that flickered erratically, casting dancing shadows that played tricks on the eye. His hand, steady despite the tremor that ran through the city’s underbelly, rested on the cold steel of his service weapon.

He’d followed the trail, the breadcrumbs of a ghost, and it had led him here, to this forgotten scar beneath the city’s skin. Han Ji-hoon, the immaculate doctor, the man who had played the role of the innocent so flawlessly, stood a hundred yards down the track, bathed in the sickly glow of a single, sputtering bulb. He was not immaculate now. His pristine white doctor’s coat was stained with something darker than ink, and in his hand, he held not a scalpel, but a glinting, wicked knife.

“So,” Ji-hoon’s voice, usually so smooth and reassuring, was raspy, a whisper that carried unnervingly through the damp air. “You finally understand.”
