The sterile glow of the precinct lights did little to dispel the miasma of dread that clung to Detective Kang Min-jae. He traced the lines on the crime scene photos, the stark white of the victims’ clothing a perverse counterpoint to the arterial crimson of the ink. Seven women, seven black roses, seven pronouncements of an abstract, chilling justice. The city, usually a symphony of neon and hurried footsteps, felt muted, holding its breath.
“Detective?” Officer Lee’s voice, usually a steady rumble, held a tremor. He approached Kang’s desk, his usual brisk stride faltering. “We… we’ve been digging into their backgrounds. All of them.”
Kang nodded, his gaze never leaving the photographs. He’d spent sleepless nights poring over the scant details, the fragmented lives that had ended so abruptly. There had to be a thread, a common denominator that had eluded them for so long. It wasn't just about the method, the meticulous staging, the chillingly poetic notes. It was the *why*.
