The late afternoon sun, a bruised plum against the bruised sky, cast long, skeletal shadows across the cobblestone streets of Blackwood. Ethan Vance felt the prickle of unease, a familiar sensation that had become his unwelcome companion since the Marcus Thorne case had landed on his desk like a lead weight. He’d grown accustomed to the gnawing suspicion, the feeling of being observed, but this was different. This felt… deliberate.

He glanced over his shoulder, his gaze sweeping across the quaint shopfronts, the overflowing window boxes of petunias, and the occasional knot of locals chatting amiably. Nothing seemed out of place, yet the air thrummed with an unseen tension. Beside him, Dr. Eleanor Ainsworth walked with a quiet grace, her usual scholarly focus momentarily clouded by a similar apprehension. Her gloved hand, resting on the worn leather of her satchel, was clenched just a fraction too tightly.

“Anything?” Ethan murmured, his voice low, barely disturbing the hushed murmur of the town.
