Chapter 12
Ethan's Doubts
As the truth about his family's friends emerges, Ethan grapples with his own past and his family's legacy. His cynicism battles with his desire for justice, creating internal conflict.
The weight of Eleanor’s revelation pressed down on Ethan like a physical thing, a suffocating blanket woven from deceit and betrayal. He’d come to Blackwood seeking a scoop, a chance to claw his way back from the professional abyss into which he’d fallen. He’d expected a convoluted tale of greed and ambition, perhaps a few double-crosses, but nothing that burrowed so deep into the marrow of his own history. The names Eleanor had spoken, the names of Marcus Thorne’s closest confidantes, were the same names that had graced his childhood birthday cards, the same faces that had smiled down at him from faded family photographs. His own family friends. The blood in his veins suddenly felt thick and sluggish, tainted by an ancestral stain he hadn't known existed.
He sat in the dimly lit study, the scent of old paper and dust clinging to the air, the flickering lamplight casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to mock his newfound unease. Eleanor watched him, her expression a mixture of sympathy and resolute determination. She, too, carried the burden of a past that refused to stay buried, a past intricately linked to Thorne’s ill-fated expedition and the subsequent unraveling of fortunes and reputations. Her family, she’d confessed, had been ruined by the same avarice that had claimed Thorne’s life, a collateral damage in a war fought with whispers and poisoned trust.
“You can’t possibly… I mean, they were… they were my parents’ friends,” Ethan stammered, the words catching in his throat. His mind reeled, trying to reconcile the image of jovial benefactors with the architects of Thorne’s demise. It was a jarring dissonance, like hearing a lullaby sung in a death rattle.
