The air in the Heart of the Ruins thrummed, not with the gentle pulse of ancient magic Elara had grown accustomed to, but with a frantic, discordant beat. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that pierced the crumbling dome, each one seeming to carry a fragment of unease. The artifact, nestled on its obsidian pedestal, pulsed with a light that was no longer warm and inviting, but sharp, almost desperate, like a trapped star fighting its way free.

Master Eldrin’s hand, usually steady, trembled as he adjusted his spectacles. “It is a critical juncture, Elara,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble against the rising tension. “The Shadow knows we are here, and it knows the artifact’s power is nearing its zenith.”

Elara clutched the worn leather of her satchel, her knuckles white. Beside her, Pip stood unnaturally still, their usual boisterous energy replaced by a coiled alertness, their gaze darting to every shadow. Even the air felt heavy, burdened by an unseen weight.
