It wasn’t the crackle of a hearth fire or the hum of a brewing storm, but something far older, a resonance that seemed to emanate from the very stones of the ancient dwelling. Elara sat across from the scholar, her hands, usually dusted with flour, now clasped tightly in her lap. The artifact, nestled on a velvet cushion, pulsed with a soft, internal light, illuminating the intricate carvings that seemed to shift and reform with each beat of its glow.

“You said,” Elara began, her voice barely a whisper, “that this artifact is a key. A key to what, exactly?”

Master Eldrin’s eyes, usually twinkling with amusement, were serious, etched with the weight of centuries.
