The air within the ancient ruins was thick with the dust of ages, a palpable presence that clung to Elara’s skin like a fine, forgotten shroud. Sunlight, fractured and hesitant, pierced the gloom through cracks in the colossal stone arches, illuminating motes dancing in the stillness. Master Eldrin had spoken of the trials ahead, of the tests designed by the Old Ones to gauge the worthiness of any who sought the artifact’s understanding, but no amount of scholarly preparation could have truly readied her for this. Pip, ever the picture of nervous energy, flitted at her side, their bright eyes scanning the shadows with an intensity that belied their usual carefree demeanor.

“It’s… quiet,” Pip whispered, their voice barely disturbing the profound silence. “Too quiet.”

Elara nodded, her baker’s hands, usually so adept at coaxing life from flour and yeast, felt clumsy and unsure. The artifact, nestled safely in a specially crafted pouch against her chest, pulsed with a faint warmth, a constant reminder of the immense weight of responsibility she now carried. She had always found solace in the familiar rhythm of her village, the comforting scent of baking bread, the predictable turning of the seasons. This place, however, was a symphony of the unknown, a melody composed of forgotten languages and the ghosts of ancient power.
