Adrian chooses to remain hidden, a ghost in his own empire. He begins secretly training and strategizing, using his family's arrogance as his greatest weapon.
The air in the safe house tasted of dust and secrets. Adrian traced the rough grain of the wooden table, the phantom sensation of damp earth still clinging to his skin. It had been days, or perhaps weeks – time had a peculiar way of blurring when one’s world had been quite literally turned upside down, then buried. Silas, a man carved from granite and quiet loyalty, had pulled him from the clutches of death, and for that, Adrian would forever be indebted. But gratitude, while a balm, could not extinguish the inferno raging within him.
His parents. The memory of their faces, vibrant and full of life, was a stark contrast to the cold, calculated narrative his uncle had spun for years. Construction worker. A lie as solid and suffocating as the soil that had pressed down on his chest. He was Adrian Hayes, heir to a legacy that dwarfed his previous meager existence, a legacy stolen by the very people who had tried to erase him.
“You are healing, Adrian,” Silas’s voice, a low rumble, broke the silence. He stood by the window, his gaze fixed on the nondescript street outside, a sentinel guarding a king in hiding. “Physically, at least. The doctors say you are remarkably strong.”
