Chapter 8
Calming the Kitties
Gently, Mary and Luna scoop up the sleeping pets. They carry them back to the living room, stroking their soft fur. Snowy purrs, and Starry snuggles close, no longer restless.
My heart fluttered with a happy sort of excitement, like a little bird trying to fly out of my chest. Luna was coming! And not just Luna, but Luna with her fluffy white cat, Snowy, and her even fluffier white kitten, Starry. I’d never met a real cat before, not up close and personal like this. My house felt extra clean, and I’d even arranged my favorite stuffed animals on the sofa, just in case Luna wanted to show them her pets. I bounced on the balls of my feet, peering out the window for the hundredth time. Would they be here soon? Would Snowy and Starry like my house? I secretly wished I had a pet, and maybe, just maybe, if Luna’s pets were really nice, they might be a little bit like my own.
Then, a car pulled up. My eyes widened. It was Luna! She hopped out, her long brown hair bouncing, and then… there they were! Two little balls of pure white fluff peeking out of a carrier. Snowy looked calm and regal, his blue eyes surveying the world with a gentle curiosity. Starry, on the other hand, seemed to vibrate with excitement, her tiny nose twitching as she took in all the new smells.
“Mary!” Luna’s voice was like a happy song. She ran up the path, the carrier held carefully. “We’re here!”
